It may have gone slightly more unnoticed than usual, but there is a lot at stake for Atletico Madrid on the final matchday of the Champions League group stages. They are now mathematically out of the competition, but they could also be eliminated from the Europa League, which Barcelona and Sevilla have dropped into.
Their opponents in the final game will be Porto, who have no reason to make things easy for them. Their aim is to go ahead of Brugge and get top spot in group B. At the same time, Bayer Leverkusen host Brugge and the Germans are looking to get third place off Atleti.
'Los Rojiblancos' have not won in their last four Champions League, the worst run out of those in their group. Leverkusen are not having their best run either and they have gone three matches without a win. What must happen for Atletico to also miss out on the Europa League?
The first thing to mention is that Atletico have it in their own hands. In other words, if they win, they will remain in third place. A defeat is not enough if Leverkusen get at least a point as the Germans have a better head to head record. If Atleti draw, they need Leverkusen not to win.
