The 38 year-old former England international has penned a deal with the Rams until the end of the season, having been released by former club LA Galaxy back in November. The veteran left-back has kept himself in top condition, and his experience could prove crucial as Derby seek a return to the top flight after a decade-long absence. Rams' boss Lampard is looking for extra depth in defensive positions as his side enter a crucial stage in their season. Before signing Cole, Lampard mused that the left-back "would bring quality and experience."
"I speak to Ash all the time" he added. "He's a great lad and I know he's fit, fresh and wanting to continue to play. I know the influence he would have but it has to be right for all parties. In my opinion, he's the greatest left-back of a generation.
"Of course, his age is an obvious thing but it's not a problem for me. I think it's pretty clear that we're interested in Ashley."
The pair played together for eight years at Chelsea between 2006 and 2014, and also featured regularly for England as part of the national side's so-called 'Golden Generation'. Announcement of Cole's deal is expected to be made in the next 48 hours.
