Both teams went into the game having won their opening game and they were fighting for first place in the group and qualfication for the last 16 with one game to spare. Argentina were on top, but Portugal had more shots. Argentina though were more clinical in front of goal.
Argentina, aware of the importance of topping the group to get an easier draw in theory, started Gaich. The move worked perfectly. After half an hour, Argentina took the lead.
In a good team move, Barco received the ball on the right side of the area. After beating a defender, he put a low ball into the six yard box, where Gaich tapped in. It was not a very precise hit, but it went in off the far post.
Portugal tried in every way possible, but whether it was due to the poor finishing or the good work of Roffo in the goal, the Portuguese team were not capable of breaching the Argentina defence.
In the closing stages, Nehuen Perez killed off the game. The Atletico Madrid man tapped in at the far post after an Ezequiel Barco free kick beat three Portuguese and Argentine heads which tried to flick the ball on. The VAR spent four minutes checking whether Sosa of Argentina got a touch which would have meant Perez was offside, but ultimately they got the right call and the goal was given.
Argentina, with this triumph, have booked their place in the last 16 of the Under 20 World Cup. Portugal will have to wait and beat South Africa in their last game.
