Serious problems for the Premier League in the midst of the new coronavirus outbreak. While some teams have managed to be fully vaccinated and avoid the most harmful effects of the new round of contagions, others such as Burnley have already seen some of their games cancelled. The latest of these, the one in which they were to visit Aston Villa.
In this case, however, the postponement was due to an outbreak of COVID-19 in the Villains, who were to play at home. The championship organisers confirmed this in a formal letter in which they specified that they had detected new problems in the team whose bench Steven Gerrard currently sits on.
"Due to more positive cases in Aston Villa squad today, Premier League Board regrettably postpones fixture against Burnley," the text reads. In the text, it can be interpreted that the tests in which the players tested positive took place on the morning of 18th December, i.e. just a few hours before the match.
The situation in the Premier League, where more than a few clashes will have to be played out in the coming months, is a desperate one. For the moment, no information has been leaked that the Premier League is determined to halt its season as happened in 2020, the year of the greatest spread of the coronavirus.
