Mexican midfielder Edson Alvarez, who has earned himself a place in the starting XI for Ajax, is negotiating the renewal of his contract until 2025, the Dutch press announced this Wednesday.
The player and the team "have expressed the intention of staying together for more time," 'De Telegraaf', the most read subscription paper in the Netherlands said. They cited club sources.
Alvarez joined the Dutch side in July 2019 from Club America for 15 million euros and he signed until June 2024. An eventual renewal and improvement of his contract would mean a one year extension.
In his first season, he did not enjoy much playing time, but since January this year, he has got himself a place in the starting XI and this summer he took part in all of Mexico's Gold Cup matches.
He has started the first three Champions League games this season, "an example of how coach Erik ten Haag values the midfielder," the magazine 'Voetbal Internacional' says. They also mentioned about the new contract.
Last summer, Rennes put 20 million euros on the table to get hold of his services, an offer which was turned down by the Dutch club.
In the build up to the last Champions League match, the Ajax coach praised Alvarez's developement and said in a press conference that "positionally he contributes a lot to the team, he looks after defensive organisation and he plays better and better."
"The construction and advancing of moves are improving more and more thanks to him. He is having great matches," Ten Hag added.
Ajax are leaders of the Eredivisie and are leaders of their Champions League group thanks to the fact they have got nine points from nine in their first three games. The last of these was thanks to a 4-0 victory over Borussia Dortmund.
