Gradually the VAR is becoming commonplace in football even in poorer leagues and federations.
At the African Cup of Nations, CAF had already said that the system would be in place from the quarter-finals onwards. In the group stage and the last 16 phase, there have been some controversial decisions.
But the most serious incident occurred in the African Champions League. Esperance Tunis and Wydad Casablanca were fighting for the title and in the opening minutes of the second half, controversy reigned.
The away side scored an equalising goal, but the referee incorrectly disalllowed it. The referee could not use the VAR as it was not working.
Wydad Casablanca refused to carry on as a result of the injustice and Esperance Tunis were awarded the title.
In the end, CAF backtracked and the match will be replayed, but a date has yet to be set for the rematch.
It has been just over a month since that scandal and CAF, an organisation under serious question, will be hoping that nothing similiar happens in this AFCON tournament.
