Bournemouth looked to be in grave danger of losing the game as they went 2-0 down to an Everton side which themselves were down to 10 men, following goals from Michael Keane and Theo Walcott in the second half.
It was Walcott who was at the centre of making the home side's afternoon even worse.
The winger was bearing down on the Bournemouth goal when Smith felt that he had to act to stop the goal-scoring opportunity.
Smith made slight contact with the player, who immediately went to the floor claiming a foul had been committed.
Referee Lee Probert agreed, and felt the nature of the incident meant that Smith deserved to be sent off the pitch.
