AC Milan started strongly against Red Star Belgrade. Pioli's men were not intimidate by the Serbians and they managed to beat the home keeper on two occasions in the first 12 minutes. Both were disallowed though.
Samu Castillejo had beaten Borjan in the 6th minute, but he was slightly offside in the build-up. Then, in the 12th minute, Theo Hernandez hit home a loose ball in the box, but the ball had struck his arm just beforehand.
AC Milan kept on attacking in the first half, but they finally broke down the Red Star defence in unexpected fashion.
Pankov scored in the 42nd minute. Castillejo put a ball into the box looking for Mandzukic and Theo Hernandez, but Pankov got there first, slid in and diverted the ball towards his own goal. The keeper got hands to it, but the ball ended up trickling into the back of the net.
