Leicester confirmed on Sunday night that their owner Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha had passed away in the awful accident, with an outpouring of sympathy coming from the whole football community.
Defender Benkovic signed for Leciester this summer, but was sent on loan to Celtic to gain experience of first team action in British football.
Speaking after his team booked their place in the Scottish League Cup final with a commanding victory over Hearts, he talked about the charismatic owner:
''This news was very bad for everyone,'' said the defender. ''Nobody expected an accident like that.
''So this win, I give it to the families of those affected.
''I met the owner, of course. I wasn't so long there, just one month. But I met him - and he was an unbelievable person.
''I really don't know what else to say about him. It's such a difficult time.
''It really is a family club, Leicester. I could see that in a month. You could see it within the first few days.''
